Warner Music Group is putting its recording and publishing sync businesses under one global leadership structure.

Warner Music Group is combining its global sync operations, bringing recorded-music and publishing teams into a single organization led by Ron Broitman. The company announced the reorganization on October 21 and promoted the executive to president of global sync.

Broitman will remain in Los Angeles and report to WMG chief operating officer Tom Corson. Guy Moot, Warner Chappell Music’s chair and CEO, will provide additional strategic oversight.

According to WMG’s announcement, the organization joins teams across Warner Chappell, Atlantic Music Group, Warner Records Group and ADA. Its remit covers creative pitching, marketing, business development, licensing clearances, administration and data analysis.

The company says the change will simplify licensing by giving clients one route into its recording and publishing catalogues. Faster clearances and coordinated pitching are its stated goals.

That structure connects two different parts of the music business: the rights in a song’s composition, including its lyrics, and the rights in a particular recording of that song. As the U.S. Copyright Office explains, these are separate copyrighted works that are often owned and licensed independently, a distinction that helps explain why labels and publishers can have separate licensing teams.

WMG, led by chief executive Robert Kyncl, promoted Corson to chief operating officer on July 31, when Armin Zerza left his combined CFO and COO role. As Music Business Worldwide noted, Corson’s responsibilities include global marketing, merchandise, direct-to-consumer operations and supply chain, placing sync within a broader operational portfolio.
