A reported Netflix film will revisit Young Thug’s YSL prosecution, the Atlanta community around him and the debate over rap in court.

Young Thug’s sprawling legal case is reportedly headed to the screen in Young Thug on Trial, a documentary expected on Netflix in 2027. Ratings Game Music reports that the feature will run approximately 90 minutes, although an exact premiere date has not been announced.

The report names Shianne Brown as director, Passion Docs as the production company, and Kari Lia and Hamish Fergusson as executive producers. Its description follows Jeffery Williams, known professionally as Young Thug, and the people who came up alongside him in Atlanta, before turning to prosecutors’ attempt to establish that the organization associated with his music label was a criminal street gang.

The YSL case became a flashpoint in the argument over using rap lyrics as criminal evidence. Prosecutors cited songs in support of their allegations, while defense attorneys argued that treating creative expression as evidence risked unfairly prejudicing defendants, a dispute that gave the proceedings significance far beyond one artist’s career.

Young Thug’s own case reached a turning point on October 31, 2024, when he pleaded guilty to one gang charge, three drug charges and two gun charges, and no contest to racketeering conspiracy and another gang charge. As the Associated Press reported, he entered those pleas without a sentencing agreement with prosecutors; the judge’s sentence allowed his release and included 15 years of probation.

The trial continued after his departure, with the jury returning verdicts for the two remaining defendants on December 3, 2024. Deamonte Kendrick, who performs as Yak Gotti, was acquitted of all charges, while Shannon Stillwell was convicted only of a gun-possession charge and acquitted of the racketeering, murder and gang charges against him.

For now, the documentary’s reported 2027 window leaves key rollout details open, including an exact premiere date, a trailer and confirmed interview participants. The timing and production credits come from the current reports, rather than an independently confirmed public announcement from Netflix.
