Giannis Antetokounmpo opened his first Miami Heat media day by making the standard simple: the goal is to compete for another NBA championship.

Giannis Antetokounmpo is settling into a completely new basketball environment after spending his entire NBA career with Milwaukee, and Monday’s media day offered his first extended look ahead as a member of the Miami Heat. The two-time MVP acknowledged that he is still learning new systems, teammates and responsibilities, but said the challenge has energized him.

“The goal is to win a championship. That’s the goal,” Antetokounmpo said, according to NBA.com. Miami rebuilt aggressively around him this offseason, adding Klay Thompson, Bobby Portis and Tim Hardaway Jr. to a group that already includes Bam Adebayo, Andrew Wiggins, Pelle Larsson and Davion Mitchell.

Antetokounmpo also spoke about the adjustment of playing alongside teammates he has never shared an NBA floor with before. He said success will come through work, whether the process produces immediate results or requires the team to learn through early mistakes.

Heat coach Erik Spoelstra made it clear that Miami does not want its new star taking a step backward. The organization expects to maximize Antetokounmpo’s strengths and keep him in the conversation among the league’s elite, while the pairing with Bam Adebayo gives Miami one of the most imposing defensive frontcourts in basketball.

Antetokounmpo arrives in Miami with a championship already on his résumé after leading Milwaukee to the 2021 title. His combination of scoring, rebounding, playmaking and defensive impact gives the Heat a centerpiece capable of changing the direction of a franchise that has spent years searching for another dominant superstar.
