LeBron James made his first Philadelphia 76ers media day appearance with a clear message: his move to Philly is about competing deep into the postseason.

LeBron James officially stepped in front of Philadelphia media in a No. 23 Sixers jersey on Monday, September 28, as he prepared for a record 24th NBA season. Speaking at the team’s practice facility in Camden, New Jersey, James made it clear that he did not come to Philadelphia simply to extend his career.

“I didn’t leave my family to lose in the second round,” James said during media day, according to NBA.com. The line immediately framed the expectations around a revamped roster that also features Tyrese Maxey, Joel Embiid and Jaylen Brown.

James said his relationship with Maxey was one of the important factors in choosing Philadelphia, while also stressing that the group will need time and sacrifice to reach its potential. He described his own role simply, saying his versatility allows him to contribute in whatever way the team needs.

The 41-year-old arrives after signing a two-year, $8 million veterans’ minimum deal with Philadelphia. He is coming off a season in which he averaged 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds and 7.2 assists per game, adding another productive year to a career that has already made him the NBA’s all-time scoring leader.

Philadelphia finished 45-37 last season before being swept in the second round by the eventual champion New York Knicks.
