Tiger Woods accepted reduced charges in his Florida DUI case Wednesday, arriving at court with girlfriend Vanessa Trump before receiving a five-year driving ban.
Sports icon Tiger Woods appeared at the Martin County Courthouse in Stuart, Florida, on Sept. 2 with Vanessa Trump and attorney Doug Duncan as he changed course in the criminal case stemming from his March rollover crash. According to the Associated Press, Woods pleaded no contest to a reduced reckless driving charge after previously entering a not-guilty plea to DUI.
Judge Darren Steele suspended Woods’ driver’s license for five years, and court documents show he was also fined $1,500. The 50-year-old golfer additionally pleaded no contest to refusing to submit to testing after the crash, while a careless-driving citation was part of the resolution.
Vanessa Trump sat behind Woods during the hearing after walking into the courthouse with him. Woods said little in court and left without speaking to reporters once the plea conference ended.
The case began after Woods’ SUV clipped a truck hauling a trailer on March 27 near his Jupiter Island home and rolled onto its side. A sheriff’s report said deputies observed signs of impairment and found two hydrocodone pills in his pocket, while a Breathalyzer test showed no alcohol and Woods refused a urine test.
Prosecutors said two toxicologists concluded there was insufficient proof to establish impairment and determined Woods had developed a pharmacological tolerance. State Attorney Thomas Bakkedahl defended the decision to accept the agreement, while Steele warned Woods that driving during the five-year suspension could send him immediately back to jail.
Woods stepped away from golf after the March arrest to seek treatment and later spent several weeks at an inpatient facility in Switzerland. He returned to public view in June at the Travelers Championship, but the plea deal now closes the criminal case with reduced charges rather than the original DUI count.
