Chris Brown says his ongoing stadium run with Usher and his Nevada residency prevent him from attending a Los Angeles hearing tied to the $12.9 million judgment owed to a former housekeeper.
Chris Brown is asking a California court to reject a request that he appear for a judgment debtor examination as former housekeeper Maria Avila continues efforts to collect a $12.9 million award. According to Complex, Brown says his current tour with Usher is one reason he cannot attend the proposed court hearing.
Brown filed a motion and accompanying declaration on August 27 challenging the examination, which would allow Avila and her attorneys to seek information about his assets and finances. The requested proceeding would take place at a courthouse in Van Nuys, California, as Avila pursues payment following her successful lawsuit over a dog attack at Brown’s former Los Angeles-area home.
The singer argues that the examination is improper because he lives in Nevada, more than 150 miles from the Van Nuys courthouse. His filing also points to the demands of his current schedule, stating, “Mr. Brown’s ongoing travel makes Plaintiffs’ request particularly problematic.”
Brown’s declaration says the touring commitment may extend well beyond the dates already announced for The R&B Tour with Usher. He said there are “ongoing late-stage discussions about extending this tour internationally through the end of 2027.” The current North American stadium run is scheduled to continue through December.
Brown also denies concealing or transferring property to avoid the judgment. A judge has previously allowed Avila to collect a portion of Brown’s tour proceeds toward the award, while the singer continues to challenge the underlying verdict and has filed a motion seeking a new trial.
The latest filing adds another layer to the legal fight after Brown argued that a Rihanna reference tainted the $12.9 million verdict. A hearing on his new-trial request is set for September, while the judgment in Avila’s favor remains in place unless the court grants further relief.
