Lil Nas X is mourning the death of his mother, Tameka Hill, sharing a deeply personal tribute and photos from different chapters of their life together.
Lil Nas X has announced that his mother, Tameka Hill, has died. The Grammy-winning artist shared the news in an Instagram post on Saturday, August 29, alongside three photographs honoring his mother and their relationship over the years.
“RIP TO THE BADDEST EVER! LOVE U FOREVER MOMMY. this one’s gonna hurt,” Lil Nas X wrote in the tribute. The carousel included a photo of Hill by herself, an image of mother and son together at an event and a childhood picture showing the rapper with his mother.
Hill’s age and cause of death have not been publicly disclosed. Representatives for Lil Nas X did not immediately respond to a request for additional information from People, which reported on the family’s loss Saturday.
Lil Nas X, born Montero Lamar Hill, had previously spoken candidly about a complicated relationship with his mother. In a 2020 interview with Variety, he said Hill struggled with addiction and explained that attempts to help her had not worked out as he hoped, while emphasizing that “there’s still love” between them.
Those family struggles also surfaced in his music. On “Dead Right Now,” a track from his 2021 debut album Montero, Lil Nas X addressed the emotional weight surrounding his mother’s addiction as part of a broader reflection on family, fame and the dramatic changes that followed his breakthrough.
The loss comes as Lil Nas X has recently returned to sharing more of his life publicly after an extended period away from social media. For now, the 27-year-old has not offered further details about his mother’s passing, leaving his Instagram tribute as his public statement on the loss.
