Brandon Clarke’s Family to Receive Full $12.5 Million After Contract Confusion

The family of late Memphis Grizzlies forward Brandon Clarke is expected to receive the full $12.5 million remaining on his NBA deal, correcting an earlier report that suggested the money would not be paid. NBA sources said Clarke’s contract was protected in the event of death, with the remaining amount set to be covered through a life insurance policy tied to the agreement. The arrangement means his estate is expected to receive the value of his final contract year even though the Grizzlies themselves will not carry that salary payment in the usual way.

The clarification followed a report from Front Office Sports stating that the final year of Clarke’s contract had been voided after his death and would not be paid to his estate. Subsequent reporting said the contract had been negotiated with death protection, allowing the $12.5 million to be paid through life insurance instead. Clarke had signed a four-year extension with Memphis in October 2022, with a $12.5 million base salary in each season of the deal.

Clarke died on May 11, 2026, at age 29 after spending his entire seven-year NBA career with the Grizzlies. The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner later determined that he died from the effects of heroin and cocaine, with multiple prescription medications listed as a contributing condition, and ruled his death an accident. Across 309 regular-season games, the former Gonzaga standout averaged 10.2 points and 5.5 rebounds while earning NBA All-Rookie First Team honors in 2020.

His final seasons were disrupted by injuries, including a torn Achilles in 2023 and knee and calf issues that limited him to two appearances during the 2025-26 campaign. Following his death, the Grizzlies remembered Clarke as an outstanding teammate whose impact extended beyond basketball and into the Memphis community. The latest contract clarification ensures the financial protection negotiated into his deal will now benefit his family and estate as intended.
