Tony Romo Hit With Three Additional Citations Following Wisconsin OWI Arrest

Tony Romo is facing three additional citations tied to his July arrest in Wisconsin, expanding the legal fallout as the former Cowboys quarterback remains away from CBS broadcasts.

Tony Romo has received three additional citations stemming from his July 23 arrest in Milwaukee on suspicion of operating a vehicle while intoxicated. Court records filed August 27 list first-offense OWI, unsafe passing on the right and possession of open intoxicants in a motor vehicle, according to CBS Texas.

The new citations come on top of the citation Romo previously received for refusing to take an intoxication test following his arrest. The Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office said a deputy stopped the 46-year-old former Dallas Cowboys quarterback while he was driving south on Interstate 43 after allegedly seeing him pass vehicles in a gore area separating interstate traffic from an on-ramp.

Authorities said Romo showed signs of possible impairment during the stop and performed poorly on standard field sobriety tests. Reports from the incident also state that an open alcoholic beverage was found inside his vehicle, while Romo was booked and later released after the traffic stop.

Romo addressed the situation through a spokesperson after the additional citations were filed. His representative said “Tony accepts full responsibility for his actions” and indicated that he is cooperating with authorities as the matter moves through the legal process.

The case has also affected Romo’s broadcasting career. CBS placed its longtime lead NFL analyst on leave after the arrest, and the network has not announced a timetable for his return. J.J. Watt has moved into the top broadcast team alongside Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson while Romo remains away from the booth.

Romo is scheduled to return to court on September 21 to address the citations. The four-time Pro Bowl quarterback has worked as CBS’ lead NFL analyst since 2017 after spending his entire playing career with the Cowboys, but his immediate broadcasting future remains unresolved as the legal matter continues.
