Nicki Minaj is opening up about her life like never before. The rap queen has shared a couple candid clips from her upcoming Queen documentary on Apple Music, where she reveals a painful childhood growing up in an abusive household.

As tears rolled down her cheeks, an emotional Nicki recalled trying to protect her mother from her father. “I remember when my mother would let my father be violent with her. As a little girl, I would stand in front of my mother and go like this,” she said as she reached out her arms.

From that moment, she knew she had to protect her family. “That’s why maybe some people would describe me as abrasive or bitchy or whatever, because I vowed from that age, ‘No man would ever abuse me, call out my name, treat me like that.’ And then all of a sudden, that was my life.”

In a second clip, she describes an abusive relationship later on in her life. “Who was I gonna inspire when I had nothing in me to give? I let one human being make me so low that I didn’t even remember who I was. I was scared to get in the studio because I didn’t believe in myself.”

But inspiration came after she moved to Miami. “I started catching a vibe as soon as I went to Miami. As soon as I changed locations, I started catching a vibe.”

She then relocated to New York, where she recorded “Coco Chanel” and “Good Form,” two tracks off Queen. “All of those things just started as mumbles in the studio in New York.”

It’s unclear who Nicki is referring to in the documentary, but her ex-boyfriend Meek Mill has already seemingly responded to her comments. Shortly after the clips were posted, Meek posted a quote about narcissism and captioned it, “Lol.”

The Queen documentary is “coming soon” to Apple Music.
