Nate Calima introduces Cheryl K from the hit movie “Crazy Rich Asians”

Celebrities & influencers gathered after the ChimeTV launch event at Noypitz Downtown Los Angeles. Fresh from the exciting launch of ChimeTV, the next generation of AAPI creatives decided to keep the night going by showcasing their talent.

“Chime’s launch party seemed to have the whole AAPI community out for it. I began the night listening to the iconic Rep. Ted Lieu and ended it listening to Crazy Rich Asian’s Cheryl K. at Noypitz; a local Filipino-owned bar and grill. I’m so excited to see how Chime represents our diverse community!” says Caitlyn Vergara (@caitlxnvee)

CEO, Director, & Author Nate Calima surprised the whole audience by announcing a performance by singer, actor, & executive producer Cheryl K (@thisischerylk) She was most known for her role in the “Crazy Rich Asians” movie, which was released in 2018 by Warner Bros. Cheryl performs “Money (That’s What I Want),” the song that plays during the opening and closing titles of the movie, in both Mandarin Chinese and English. Awkwafina, who plays Peik Lin in the movie, raps on the song in the version that plays during the closing credits. Jon M. Chu, the director of the movie, saw Cheryl perform a 15-second a cappella version of Jessie J’s “Mamma Knows Best” on YouTube and decided to hire her.

Nate Calima also introduced a table full of influencers and the next generation of entertainment giants such as director Immanuel Portus (@immanuelportus), influencer Matt “Supes” Ramos (@therealsupes), Artist Jules “Pure Skies” Lozada (@pure.skies), Producer David James Estioco (@destioco) and celebrity photographer David Lee (@davidcleephotography)

A few days later, the same group was seen supporting Cheryl K at Dragonfly Hollywood where she performed fan favorites and a new unreleased song. Along with the large group of support, one notable figure was Filipino American Hollywood actor Dante Basco who is a voice actor, film, and television performer. He is well recognized for his performance in Steven Spielberg’s Hook as Rufio, the captain of the Lost Boys, as well as for his voicing of Jake Long on American Dragon and Zuko on Avatar: The Last Airbender.

The Asian American & Pacific Islander (AAPI) community is continuing to uplift and support each other and is working to create a stronger presence in Hollywood and beyond.
