Joshwuh Speaks to His Childhood Self on ‘To The Kid’ EP

Meet Joshwuh: The prolific creative is fresh off the release of his “to the kid” EP which, as one could infer, is a series of songs dedicated to his childhood self.  But while his lyrics may harken back to the past, the Chicago native is still very focused on the present moment.

“My current influences are directly with the artists I perform with here in Chicago,” Joshwuh said, specifically naming the likes of Yna, D’Andre Adons, Jake Gatsby and MasterSteve.  “Being directly exposed to different styles of playing, production, sounds and genres really influences how I create my own music, and it’s helped bring out a new creative side that I’ve been exploring through this EP.”

On said EP, Joshwuh went all in on reminiscing about his childhood, taking many of his parents’ old home videos they accumulated over the years and compiling them all together to create one long memory tape.

“I wanted to lock myself in my apartment and watch as much as I could, feel as much as I could then create as much as I could after watching,” he said.  “So, I did exactly that for three days and nights.”

The four-pack of songs does a fantastic job of exploring childhood memories through music; not only is it therapeutic for the artist himself, but it prods the listener to look back at their lives as kids too.

“I’ve been taking time to explore myself as an artist and understand why I enjoy creating, playing, producing and performing music,” Joshwuh said.  “I want to begin sharing my story of who I am through my music, and this is just the start.”

“‘to the kid’ is dedicated to the people that raised me to become who I am today,” he added.  “It’s a thank you, a victory lap…it’s love to the community who brought me here.”

The buck is certainly not stopping here for Joshwuh; as a solo artist, he’s already working on another project and continuing to explore new sounds and ways to craft music.  He’s also continuing to perform in Chicago and working with other artists when he can, furthering his reach and sonic prowess.
