What is your name and what city do you rep?
My name is Vandes Jackson. I am a Chicago native, however, I’m coming by way of Los Angeles California.
Tell us about your latest releases, what inspired you to create them?
As of recently I wanted to truly expand my musical palette and really create something fresh. I found myself striving to bend and break the rules of typical composition in terms of having no hook, and abstract production. It’s just truly a blessing to be able to work with some of the music industry giants, and grow in the process of my artistry.
What is unique about you and your music?
I’d have to say one unique factor is the producer-artist aspect. I am an engineer, producer, and artist simutanenously. My creative process is very broad and open-ended. I can make 20+ beats this week then not make another track until a month later. Nevertheless, in the process of that month, I could have upwards of 100 songs, hooks, or verses within that allotted time. I certainly like to take my time, and create as I feel led.
What shaped your music?
My upbringing entailed growing up as a church, jazz, and fusion musician. Most of my musical roots are diciplined through classical training, and music theory. The general knowledge of music history is what makes me venture out to create something never heard before. I enjoy Mozart and Beethoven. Very much a fan of the rebels of our era as well like Prince, and D’angelo.
When did you realize you were going to make music professionally?
My first job in Chicago came about my sohopmore year of highschool. I was in the 2011 Jazz Ambassadors as a one of two drummers. We played all across the city, and even got a chance to do some professional recording. Playing has always been a passion of mine! That job gave me the ambition, and pure tenacity to really pursue music full time. I learned very young the sky wasn’t the limit, and it’s entirely up to you to create those “jobs and opportunities” for yourself.
What type of music do you listen to?
I listen to every genre i possibly can. I’m always trying to find more, or create a new genre. As of lately, I like what P. Diddy is doing with modern R&B, so I’ve really gone back to the older Bryson Tiller days. I always enjoy his music! 2015 was a nostalgic time for me. I’ve also been listening to alot of Wayne Shorter and Future. Wayne is one of my favorite jazz saxophonist, and Future is one of my favorite musicians. Future and Southside 808 has certainly influenced alot of my work from 2020 up to this point.
What inspires you to write music?
The possibility of the unknown. Music is my food. Music is my air. Music is my ambition! You never know when that next hit will come. This is why it’s so important to be consistent, and not worry too mushc about money initially. My inspiration has always been “what can this potentially lead to in the future?”.
What do you do when you don’t do music (creative or otherwise) and that you are passionate about?
When I’m not doing music, I enjoy meaningful experiences. Huge fan of nature, galleries, and networking. Most things inspire me to create something musically from a hike, to a painting, to a conversation.
Happiness to you is…
Enjoying what you’re doing, while you’re doing it, and not caring what anyone has to say about it. On the contrary, happiness comes with a fee! It takes sacrifices, dedication, and timless hours to keep pushing when no one can see the vision but you. You owe it to yourself to be your best self.
What do you wish you were told when you first started making music that you think would help artists just starting out?
I wish someone would’ve told me to be prepared to hustle (legally). No handouts exist in the music industry. Especially for independent artists like me, so it’s more than beneficial to have multiple assets, talents, and resources to help you fund your dreams!
Tell us about your upcoming projects…
I’ve been working with my creative director on visuals for some upcoming rollouts this season. I can’t say too much, but I’m definitely anticipating the release of Rockstar Trap Music II. I can guarantee every project I release from now on will have at least one major feature, or collaborator. I haven’t put a date on it yet, but it’s in the works! There’s a collaboration with Sticky Fingaz I’m really looking forward to dropping this fall. Wheels up!
Where do we find you music / music projects?
