Three-time Grammy-nominated artist and The Pharcyde founding member Bootie Brown returns with new solo single ‘2 Get 2 U’, a smooth hip-hop cut exploring the lengths men will go to capture someone’s attention.
Born Romye Robinson, Brown has spent decades pushing the boundaries of alternative hip-hop. As a founding member of The Pharcyde, he helped establish the group’s playful and left-field sound on influential tracks including ‘Passin’ Me By’ and ‘Drop’, before expanding his catalogue through collaborations with artists including Gorillaz, appearing on ‘Dirty Harry’ and ‘New Gold’.
On ‘2 Get 2 U’, Brown turns his attention towards attraction, pursuit and the different tactics people use to win someone over.
“What ‘2 Get 2 U’ means to me is the various ways men will try to seduce a woman,” Brown explains.
The single also emerged from Brown’s work supporting emerging producers through OrganicBeat Session, his PharcydeTV platform dedicated to showcasing beatmakers and new creative talent.
It was through the show that Brown discovered producer Les Lockheart, whose production would eventually become the foundation for the track.
“I host a show called OrganicBeat Session on PharcydeTV, and Les Lockheart is one of many talented beatmakers who are showcased on the stream,” Brown says. “I heard this track and knew I could create something special with it. I have been working on it for some time now, and it’s ready for me to share with the people.”
The resulting collaboration pairs Lockheart’s production with Brown’s relaxed delivery and character-driven storytelling, connecting the individuality of his earlier work with the new sounds and collaborators continuing to inspire him.
‘2 Get 2 U’ arrives during another busy period for Brown, who is currently touring with Gorillaz as they prepare to begin the US leg of their tour.
Beyond his solo releases, Brown continues to work across music, fashion and media through PharcydeTV and his co-ownership of Store No 242. His collaborative catalogue has also continued to expand through projects including Africa Express track ‘Otim Hop’ and his work with Nubiyan Twist on ‘Red Herring’.
Decades after helping shape alternative hip-hop with The Pharcyde, ‘2 Get 2 U’ finds Bootie Brown still driven by collaboration and creative curiosity, bringing his unmistakable personality into another chapter of his career.
