Marietta, Georgia artist Captain Mac OD33 is building his career around authenticity, versatility, and the belief that being an artist means being an asset—not a liability.
Born and raised in Marietta, Georgia, Captain Mac OD33 has been creating music since he was around 10 or 11 years old. His creative journey began with poetry and some unconventional early experimentation—recording through PowerPoint before eventually developing into the artist and performer he is today.
His musical foundation was shaped by a wide range of influences, including Usher, Missy Elliott, Rihanna, Chris Brown, Beyoncé, Ludacris, T.I., and Lil Wayne. Hip-hop and pop culture played a major role in his development, while his grandparents introduced him to an older generation of music. Riding around with his grandparents and spending time with his Bigdaddy, who regularly played vinyl records, gave him an appreciation for music beyond his own generation.
For Captain Mac, however, becoming a successful artist requires more than simply making good music.
“Talent is only half the battle.”
He believes artists have to develop marketability, learn how to connect with people, and become comfortable showing their personalities. Being sociable, relatable, vulnerable, and unapologetically individual are all important parts of building a career.
The same preparation applies to performing. Captain Mac emphasizes knowing the lyrics, understanding how to work a crowd, and showing up with the right performance and show mixes. When he gets on stage, he doesn’t simply perform songs—he interacts with the room.
He’ll ask the crowd how they’re feeling, use call-and-response techniques, and sometimes turn portions of his lyrics over to the audience. When a hook is repetitive or catchy enough, he’ll let the crowd help deliver it.
That connection with people is one of the most rewarding parts of being an artist for him.
After putting his emotions and experiences into a project, there’s something different about seeing another person genuinely connect with it. The same is true after performing, when someone approaches him afterward to express their support.
For an artist who has experienced being overlooked and criticized, those moments carry weight.
Authenticity Over Image
One of the defining characteristics of Captain Mac OD33’s approach is his refusal to manufacture an image simply because it looks good in music.
His social media content reflects the same philosophy.
If he’s posting from a particular location, he says he’s actually been there. If he’s filming in his backyard, that’s genuinely where he is. He has even posted himself in his car while making Domino’s deliveries.
There’s no attempt to hide the fact that he’s working.
Captain Mac has experienced both making and losing thousands of dollars, and he’s comfortable showing both sides of that journey. To him, the highs and lows are equally important because they’re part of the story.
That philosophy also carries into his music.
He doesn’t want to portray himself as a person he’s not or create an identity based around violence simply because that image may be marketable. When he raps about traveling to places such as Italy and Turkey, it’s because those are places he has genuinely experienced.
He’s been an athlete, traveled internationally, experienced success, made mistakes, and faced difficult situations. Those experiences give him plenty to draw from creatively without having to fabricate a lifestyle.
Even when he makes harder music, he says the emotion behind it comes from real thoughts and experiences. At the same time, he approaches those emotions with reason and discernment because he understands that he has something to lose.
His experience with incarceration reinforced that perspective.
Captain Mac has spent time in jail—even if only for 24 hours—and doesn’t romanticize the experience. He describes it as something he hated and an experience that came with significant legal expenses. He is still dealing with the legal consequences of that situation.
For him, the lesson is simple: he refuses to become a “crash dummy.”
Instead, he wants to remain an asset.
That distinction is central to how he views his career. While some artists may allow an image or lifestyle to become a liability, Captain Mac wants to build something sustainable while continuing to learn.
He considers himself a student of the game.
Creating Outside the Box
Captain Mac isn’t limiting his creative development to music.
He’s invested in his own camera equipment so he can create more content, expand his reach, and build his platforms without always having to leave Georgia. Rather than relying entirely on other people to create promotional material, he’s learning how to control more of his own visual presentation.
He’s also developing an interest in tattooing and sharing that journey through his platforms.
Outside of music and content creation, Captain Mac is active in gaming and sports. He streams video games on Twitch under @cptod33 and regularly plays Call of Duty on PlayStation. He has also recently joined the Peaches and Hoops team, giving fans another way to connect with him outside of music.
And when he’s not creating, gaming, playing basketball, or working, there’s a good chance he’s traveling.
Travel remains one of his passions, whether he’s exploring somewhere else in the United States or traveling internationally. Locally, he may also be found working out at Kennesaw Mountain.
More Than a Music Career
Captain Mac OD33’s story is ultimately about creating a career without losing the person behind it.
He’s building from Marietta with a willingness to show the real journey—the work, the setbacks, the wins, the mistakes, the travel, the music, and everything in between.
In an industry where artists can feel pressured to create an image before they’ve had the opportunity to establish an identity, Captain Mac is taking a different approach.
He’s betting on authenticity.
He’s betting on versatility.
And most importantly, he’s focused on becoming an artist whose real-life experiences give the music something an image alone never could.
