F.Y.I. Blends Boom-Bap Roots With a Fresh Vision on “Clear Skies”

Mid-City Los Angeles emcee F.Y.I. is pushing his independent run forward with “Clear Skies,” a new Akili-produced single that pairs boom-bap foundations with a retro-futuristic official visual.

LOS ANGELES, CA — F.Y.I. has returned with “Clear Skies,” released August 17 through F.Y.I. Enterprises. The 2:07 record is produced by Akili of Blacktransit, with streaming credits listing L. Marshall as lyricist and E. Clark as composer, and it keeps the rapper centered in the lyric-driven, underground hip-hop lane that has defined much of his catalog.

The Mid-City Los Angeles artist has been building that identity for years. F.Y.I. first gained wider notice as part of the trio Those Chosen before stepping out on his own, and an earlier solo project, Yo! The Places You’ll Go, reached No. 1 on the CMJ Hip-Hop chart; his catalog has also included collaborations with Ab-Soul and !llmind, while later releases have continued his mix of conscious writing, boom-bap textures and West Coast perspective.

“Clear Skies” adds another chapter to that run with an emphasis on focus, perseverance and seeing beyond the noise. A recent review from Word Is Bond highlighted the track’s nostalgic vocal sample and F.Y.I.’s animated delivery, while Sway’s Universe described the song as a meeting point between golden-era influence and the artist’s present-day creative direction. The result is less about recreating an earlier period than using that foundation to frame where F.Y.I. is now.

The official video extends that idea visually, placing F.Y.I. inside a stylized world of throwback imagery, dramatic lighting and futuristic effects. The treatment plays with the feeling of moving between eras, matching the song’s balance of classic underground rap sensibilities and a more contemporary presentation.

That progression can also be heard across his recent releases. In 2024, F.Y.I. teamed with Jadakiss on “UUUknow,” followed by “S.O.E. (State of Emergency)” and its Waterr-assisted remix in 2025, then “Can’t Be Denied” and “Nothing’s Gonna Stop” featuring Bishop Nehru earlier this year. Rather than abandoning the sound that built his audience, he has continued expanding it through new collaborators, producers and visual concepts.

With “Clear Skies” now out alongside its official visual, F.Y.I. is keeping the focus on steady growth from Los Angeles outward. The single fits naturally within a catalog built around bars, self-belief and independent momentum, while giving listeners another look at an artist intent on carrying traditional hip-hop values into his next phase.
