D4vd’s father made two notable Texas real estate moves in the months before the singer switched from a high-profile private legal team to a public defender.
New property details are drawing attention to D4vd’s family finances as his murder case moves toward trial. According to TMZ, real estate records show his father, Dawud Burke, sold a three-bedroom, two-bathroom Houston home for $229,000 in early July.
The sold property reportedly measured 1,819 square feet. A few months earlier, in late April, Dawud also took out a $138,000 loan against a different Houston property, described as a three-bedroom, one-bathroom home spanning roughly 1,260 square feet.
The transactions have surfaced while D4vd, whose legal name is David Anthony Burke, faces a major shift in how his criminal defense is being handled. His private attorneys Blair Berk, Marilyn Bednarski and Regina Peter withdrew after the court determined he qualified for appointed counsel, and the Los Angeles County Public Defender’s Office has taken over his representation.
D4vd pleaded not guilty at his Aug. 31 arraignment to charges including first-degree murder, continuous sexual abuse of a child and unlawful mutilation of human remains in connection with the death of 14-year-old Celeste Rivas Hernandez. The 21-year-old singer is expected back in court on Oct. 19, with the case proceeding after a judge found sufficient evidence at a preliminary hearing for him to stand trial.
The financial development is especially notable because evidence presented in court indicated D4vd earned millions during the rise of his music career. Still, the reported property records do not establish that Dawud Burke’s home sale or $138,000 loan was used to pay his son’s legal expenses, and the timing alone does not prove a direct connection between the transactions and D4vd’s defense costs.
The latest turn follows months of legal developments in the case. In August, a past interaction involving D4vd resurfaced as his murder case headed toward trial, while prosecutors have maintained that they intend to prove their allegations in court and D4vd continues to deny the charges.
