Exclusive Interview with Fast Rising Louisiana artist Donnie Fresh

What is your name and what city do you rep?

Donnie Fresh was born and raised in 7th Ward of New Orleans, Louisiana on May 3, 1997. Donnie’s real name Donald Mutin Jr.

Tell us about your latest releases, what inspired you to create them?

My latest release, “No Handouts”, dropping September 22nd, is inspired by just going through everyday life. Writing music is really a form of therapy for me and with this song I wanted to create something not only for myself but something for the people who struggle with mental health, anxiety, depression, etc. I wanted to give them a feel good song that can really turn anyones mood around.

What is unique about you and your music?

What makes me and my music unique is definitely my style and the truth behind my lyrics. My songs come from everyday experiences that I go through so having the ability to be vulnerable on records and being versatile is something that comes easy to me.

What shaped your music?

The main things that shaped my music into what you hear today is how and where I grew up. Growing up in New Orleans and going through everyday life has molded me into the person and sound that I am. From the heartache of losing a loved one to the heartache from being cheated and lied to has played a really big role in my upbringing and the pain behind some of my sound.

When did you realize you were going to make music professionally?

I knew I wanted to make music since I was 10-11 years old. Music was always my outlet that I knew I could run to and was something that had always been in my household. Growing up I was inspired by listening to some of my grandmothers favorite artists, such as BB King, Muddy Waters, etc. My sister introduced me to hip hop as I got older and I fell in love with it after discovering No Limit and Cash Money.

What type of music do you listen to?

This may come as a surprise to a lot of people but I actually don’t listen to a lot of hip-hop, I love a lot of alternative, classic rock and R&B.

What inspires you to write music?

My inspiration comes from the passion and love I have for music. Writing music has always been my escape from reality and has become a form of therapy for me.

What do you do when you don’t do music (creative or otherwise) and that you are passionate about?

Music is definitely my creative outlet that I’m passionate about but besides that I think it’s important to also take time to yourself. I’m big into working out and spending time with my family as well as going out on the boat and being by the water. You have to do things that make you happy and I feel like your mental health is something that’s very important to take care of.

What do you wish you were told when you first started making music that you think would help artists just starting out?

That it’s a process that you have to go through. Every little step you take may not seem like much but in the long run it will shape your end goal and what your trying to accomplish. Also never let anyone try to tell you what you should sound like, stay true to your sound and always believe in your music!

Tell us about your upcoming projects…
