What is your name and what city do you rep?
Brodi Phoenix, I rep Plano, north of Dallas. Originally born in San Antonio.
Tell us about your latest releases, what inspired you to create them?
My latest release, “Lemon Drop,” was produced by Yogic. Sometimes, when I’m working on a production or listening to an instrumental someone else has created, something just clicks, and that was the case with this track. I didn’t start with a specific idea for “Lemon Drop”; instead, I began by working on the chorus and then crafted the verses from both a woman’s and a man’s perspective, exploring themes of nightlife and its consequences. I believe many people can relate to these experiences.I resonate with Lauryn Hill’s idea that “I write songs that lyrically move me,” and Michael Jackson’s belief that artists should let the music come to them rather than imposing their will on it. When I’m inspired, I don’t approach songwriting with a rigid plan. I let my feelings guide the process, allowing the music to develop naturally.
What is unique about you and your music?
I have a lot of unreleased songs that blend genres in ways that might surprise people! What sets my music apart is how I draw from various inspirations and genres to create something uniquely my own. While many artists, especially in Hip-Hop, tend to follow trends or sound like what’s popular on TikTok, I believe there’s a place for catchy, commercial hits. However, my music aims to make you think and reflect, whether it’s a commercial hit or explores more conscious themes, all while incorporating great instrumentation.
What shaped your music?
My music has been deeply influenced by my upbringing. Growing up as a product of divorce, moving between cities, struggling with my identity, and experiencing a disconnect with some family members and childhood hurts, I’ve channeled these past pains into my songwriting. Late in high school and early in college, J. Cole’s “Warm Up” and “Friday Night Lights” mixtapes inspired me to improve my writing. Later, Kendrick Lamar’s “Good Kid, M.A.A.D City” and “Section.80,” especially tracks like “Sing About Me, I’m Dying of Thirst,” further challenged me to refine my writing process and deepen my lyrical expression based on my own life experiences.
When did you realize you were going to make music professionally?
I got started in high school, initially producing trap instrumentals inspired by artists like Lex Luger, Waka Flocka, and Rick Ross. It was a fun time. I began with poetry and recorded my first remix of Chris Brown’s “Deuces” when I was 14. Over the years, many people told me, “Bro, you’re going to do this for the rest of your life.” While I’m not there yet, I’m working towards it. Although I had no formal music training, I developed a keen ear for production, arranging, and layering vocals. My brothers are jazz musicians, and I have several artists, singers, and rappers in my family, so music has always been in my blood.
What type of music do you listen to?
I listen to a wide range of music, including R&B, old school soul and funk, heavy metal, folky singer-songwriter songs, and alternative rock. Interestingly, I don’t listen to Hip-Hop as much.
What inspires you to write music?
My life experiences and faith in Christ provide me with a biblically based foundation. I find a wealth of storytelling and literature in the scriptures that inspires and motivates me to make an impact on my listeners’ lives. This is reflected in my name, Brodi Phoenix. A phoenix symbolizes rising from the ashes and a sense of rebirth, with healing found even in its tears. I am driven by the idea of helping listeners transform their pain into triumph.
What do you do when you don’t do music (creative or otherwise) and that you are passionate about?
I am passionate about digital marketing. I own a business and work with an array of videographers for clients and it allows me to do music! I love it.
Happiness to you is…
To me, happiness is finding peace in pursuing what you love, regardless of the outcome, whether it’s good or bad.
What do you wish you were told when you first started making music that you think would help artists just starting out?
Explore all genres, take vocal lessons, study music theory, remain humble, and always be a student of the craft.
Tell us about your upcoming projects…
I’m currently focused on releasing a single each month, along with monthly visual content for social media, and developing a trilogy of The Phoenix projects that blend soul, funk, hip hop, and more. At the moment, I’m also working on a small EP that explores digital modern love, relationships, and unrealistic expectations.
