What is your name and what city do you rep?
DMGD is an independent recording artist and singer/songwriter, hailing from New York now on the West Coast. Go Yankees!!
Tell us about your latest releases, what inspired you to create them?
My latest releases have just been a cumulation of everything I have been scared to put out in the past. I decided to release a stripped version of my most popular track “Anxiety,” also released a few demos I made, and a new track called “Animals” which is a raunchy, nostalgic fun ride. “Animals” was inspired by 90’s underground gay culture.
What is unique about you and your music?
I am a giant ball of uniqueness. From my vocals, to my style- I like to stand out and express myself! For some artists, I think being able to be authentic can sometimes waiver between you playing a part, and truly being yourself. For me, I just am myself; you can love it or hate it, but I’m not compromising. I left my f*cks at the door.
What shaped your music?
My music is shaped by my life experiences. Granted, the EP is based on only one aspect of my life experiences, but if you have ever listened to my catalogue- you will see it varies depending on what I’m going through at the time.
When did you realize you were going to make music professionally?
Oh lordy, this was never a pipe dream or a hobby. I quite literally dove in at 18. I packed up and flew across the country from New York where I spent my whole life to Hollywood. I realized this was going to be my life’s work when I met my first producer and spent months in the studio just creating, and breathing music.
What type of music do you listen to?
I listen to all kinds of music but my favorite artists currently are Ruel, Omar Apollo, Jessie Murph, and Fletcher.
What inspires you to write music?
My inspiration varies but expressing myself through music is why I do it. How I’m feeling or an experience, traumatic or amazing. But the main reason is healing– for me, no matter what I’m going through, it always comes out in a song- that’s how I survive and cope with life!
What do you do when you don’t do music (creative or otherwise) and that you are passionate about?
When I’m not doing music I like to write lyrics and poetry, and spend time with my family. I’m an Italian New Yorker so cooking a feast on Sunday is always the move.
Happiness to you is…
A beer and a microphone.
What do you wish you were told when you first started making music that you think would help artists just starting out?
I wish I was told to be patient, to get used to the word no, to build your skin thick. Most importantly, I wish I was told to never lose sight of yourself, and create for yourself, no one else!
Tell us about your upcoming projects…
I’m currently working on my debut EP which will be released in the summer of this year. The project is a 5-song pop/soul concept EP about my bad dating history and I’m not coming to make friends, I’m coming out swinging hard. Be ready!
Where do we find you music / music projects?
You can find my works anywhere there is music.
