Eddie Murphy Working on New Stand-Up Material for 3 Years

Eddie Murphy Reveals He’s Been Recording New Jokes for the Last 3 Years

Eddie Murphy is officially on his way back y’all. Recently, the actor/comedian was announced as the host of an episode Saturday Night Live during the upcoming 45th season. This will mark his first time returning to the show in a meaningful way since 1984.

Before his December 21st hosting gig though, Murphy’s set to star in Netflix’s original film, Dolemite is My Name. And on top of that, he also recently signed a deal with Netflix worth a reported $70 million for new stand-up specials. Something he elaborated on while speaking with The New York Times this week.

Murphy opened up to reporter Jason Zinoman about the inspiration for his new material. “I now have a whole lifetime of experiences to draw upon. There was a time when I was at the center of everything, what I was doing, and how funny I was and how popular. I’m not at the center. Now my kids are and everything revolves around them.” He also shared that he’s been writing and recording new material over the last three years. According to Murphy, he’s got about 20 minutes ready to go and plans on working up to a full 90-minute set, which he will then take on the road beginning late next year.

Dolemite is My Name will receive a limited theatrical run beginning October 4th. It will then drop on Netflix just a few weeks later on October 25th.
