Donell Jones turned his VERZUZ battle with Joe into a full-circle R&B moment by bringing 702 onstage to perform the 1996 favorite “Get It Together.”

Donell Jones delivered one of the biggest surprises of his Thursday night VERZUZ appearance by reuniting with 702 during his matchup against Joe. The trio joined Jones for “Get It Together,” the 1996 single he wrote and produced for the group’s debut album No Doubt.

According to Complex, the reunion came during Round 7 of the August 20 “R&B Nights” battle. Jones used the 702 record to answer Joe’s “More & More,” creating a standout nostalgia moment for viewers watching the event across Complex, Apple Music and official VERZUZ channels.

“Get It Together” holds a significant place in both artists’ catalogs. Released in 1996, the song became 702’s first entry on the Billboard Hot 100 and was later certified gold, while Jones’ writing and production credit helped establish his reputation behind the scenes before his own solo career fully took off.

The appearance also matched the tone Jones had set before the event. Rather than treating the night as an aggressive face-off, he described the matchup with Joe as “a celebration” of two veteran R&B catalogs, saying ahead of the show that both men had been in the game for roughly three decades.

Jones and Joe traded signature records throughout the night, with Joe drawing from songs such as “I Wanna Know,” “Don’t Wanna Be a Player” and “Stutter,” while Jones leaned on staples including “U Know What’s Up,” “Where I Wanna Be” and “This Luv.” The live format also gave both singers room to bring out special guests and revisit songs tied to different parts of their careers.

702’s return made that history especially visible. The group’s connection to Jones predates many of his best-known solo hits, so seeing them share the stage again turned a writing and production credit from the mid-1990s into a live reunion nearly 30 years later.

Joe ultimately finished ahead in the fan voting, but the 702 appearance gave Jones one of the night’s most memorable moments. For longtime R&B fans, the reunion served as a reminder of how much Jones’ influence extends beyond his own singles and into records that helped shape the era around him.
