The spread of the coronavirus has found the government, pharmaceutical companies, and more looking for the solution to creating a vaccine for the deadly infection.
While that is on the way, scientists at the University of Lethbridge have been studying one way to possibly block a COVID-19 infection, noting that cannabis may keep coronavirus away.
Researchers reportedly studied over 400 strains of weed, and have narrowed the amount of strains down to 12 that have the highest potential to keep the virus away.
The goal of the study was to find ways to prevent coronavirus from finding a potential host in oral cavities, intestines, and the lungs.
The lead researcher in the study—Dr. Igor Kovalchuk said, “A number of them have reduced the number of these (virus) receptors by 73 percent, the chance of it getting in is much lower. If they can reduce the number of receptors, there’s much less chance of getting infected.” Kovalchuk noted that if the study was peer-reviewed and more research was conducted, the study could be conducted in the form of gel caps, inhalants, and/or mouthwash.
