A great DJ knows that music is a means of expression, not just a way to look cool for some time to the end. This sort of DJ would then go on and on in the industry for years to the point where they become complete masters. They lad others and inspire them into a whole new dimension.
The great are always inventing and reinventing their style in the musical landscape. Dj Carl Cox for example started out with funky techno music, then tech-house, then funk soul. This is not to say that you compromise your identity, but rather enhance it progressively.
