Video Shows California Officer Beating Teen Accused of Smoking Marijuana

A policeman with the Rancho Cordova Police Department is the latest law enforcement officer to be caught on camera abusing his power by way of abusing a 14-year-old accused of smoking marijuana.

In a now-viral video, an unidentified white police officer was filmed trying to detain a teen he claimed was smoking marijuana. The officer was captured repeatedly punching the teenage boy in the face, stomach, and head. He also pushed his face into the pavement before throwing the frail teen on his stomach and placing the teen’s arms behind his back.

Despite the officer’s assertion that the teen was smoking marijuana, reports say no drugs were found on him. The only thing found on him was a pack of Swisher Sweets cigarillos commonly used to smoke marijuana. The Rancho Cordova Police Department says that the officer was patrolling the area after getting tipped off about the sale of tobacco and alcohol to minors. Sheriff’s spokesperson Sgt. Tess Deterding said after watching the exchange that the teen “was uncooperative and refused to give the deputy basic identifying information.”

“Having reasonable suspicion that criminal activity was occurring, the deputy attempted to detain the juvenile so he could conduct further investigation,” said Deterding. “The juvenile became physically resistive at that time, causing the deputy to lose control of his handcuffs, which landed several feet away. The deputy attempted to maintain control of the juvenile without his handcuffs and while alone waiting for his partners to arrive and assist him. […] Ultimately, the deputy recovered tobacco products from the 14-year-old juvenile, which is presumably the reason for his resistance … This type of situation is hard on everyone—the young man, who resisted arrest, and the officer, who would much rather have him cooperate.”

The teen was cited and released to his parents according to police department records.
