It’s one thing to be historic, but to be iconic is legendary. That is the best way to describe, two time Oscar Award-Winning and fashion icon Ruth E. Carter. In honor of her New York Times Must Read The Art of Ruth E. Carter: Costuming Black History and the Afrofuture, from Do the Right Thing to Black Panther, The Gathering Spot LA hosted an exclusive and immersive book signing for members of their community to get to know more about the renowned costume designer and her rise to fame. Having worked on some of the world’s biggest movies and box office hits including Black Panther, Coming to America 2, “Malcolm X” biopic, Selma, Spike Lee’s “Do The Right Thing” and Steven Spielberg’s “Amistad”, attendees were in for a treat as Carter is currently one of the most sought after costume designers in the world.
Her unique way of infusing international modern African art with futuristic sci-fi technology is why Ruth E. Carter is the only African American woman in history to win two Oscars. Winning her first in 2019 for the illustrious costume designs for Black Panther, Carter became the first African American woman to win an Oscar for costume design. She won her second Oscar yet again for costume design for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever the sequel to Black Panther in 2023. These accomplishments put her in a league of her own as no other Black woman has ever won more than one Oscar Award from the Academy of Motion Pictures. Finding so much success, The Hampton University alumnus is also the first Black costume designer to have a star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame, paving the way for future Black costume designers all over the world.
She has shaped the story of the black experience on television for the last three decades, bringing Afrofuturism to the mainstream. The Afrofuturism Carter has been able to create was on full display at The Gathering Spot. Not only did Ms. Carter host a book signing and meet and greet, but she also did a sit down Q&A giving her fans more insight about her historic rise to fame. Lending insight on what it was like to work with the likes of Spike Lee, Ryan Coogler, Eddie Murphy, Chadwick Boseman, and Steven Spielberg, Carter did an excellent job of painting the picture of who Ruth E Carter truly is. As she candidly discussed the inspiration behind her book visuals, famous designs, mood boards, and film stills, The Gathering Spot did an incredible job of bringing the book to life. Throughout the night, attendees were able to see physical costumes that Carter designed for Coming 2 America worn by several models who exemplified the Afrofuturistic look. To go along with the theme, the decor made everyone feel like they were in Zamunda partaking in a royal gathering.
In honor of Carter’s new book and her partnership with Crown Royal, The Gathering Spot curated three specialty drinks that added to the festivities that were served throughout the night. To go along with the libations, tasty Hor d’Oeuvres were also served creating a memorable dining experience for all attendees. To make this momentous occasion unforgettable, The Gathering Spot gifted Carter a lifetime membership to the Gathering Spot, celebrating black excellence and community at its finest. Carter was also presented a customized Crown Royal bottle that seemed fitting for this moment in time.
