Stream Jennie Solo, Earlier this year, BLACKPINK made history on the Billboard 200 and Hot 100 charts as the highest-ranking K-pop girl group of all time, and now one member is going “Solo.” In the first of what is reportedly planned to be several tracks from the individual members of the quartet, singer-rapper Jennie comes into her own as an independent woman in her new song.

Released on Monday (Nov. 12), “Solo” begins with a plinking, snapping melody before turning into an anthemic dance track rife with EDM synths and beat drops, boisterous, hip-hop-slanting percussion, and squealing whistle effects. Throughout it, Jennie showcases her alternating mellow and soaring vocals and her deadpan, swaggering rap.

“I’m tired of pretending/ I’m done,” Jennie says at the start of the track, introducing the song’s independent take on being on one’s own. During the pre-chrous, she asserts her position: “This is not a touching love story/ No romance, no sincerity/ I’m sorry, but I’m not sorry/ From today on I’m a shining solo.”

“Solo” was released alongside a music video that features Jennie on her own as she transforms from an “innocent and delicate” woman in a luxurious manor, to a charismatic woman growing into her independent nature, reveling in being “Solo” through a variety of dance scenes, showing off sleek choreography and ending things off in a powerful way amid a crowd of female dancers. Stream Jennie Solo

The dance moments are interspersed with a few other plot points, and show Jennie confronting the object of her affection and, later, wearing angel wings as if to express how free she has become from the relationship that’s ended. Throughout the video, the BLACKPINK singer dons designer looks, balancing a fiercely sweet but urbane style.

Within five hours of its release on YouTube, the video had surpassed over 4 million views. The song was written by Teddy, a prominent producer at BLACKPINK’s label YG Entertainment and the man behind the similarly dance-focused “Gashina” and “Heroine” from popular soloist Sunmi, and co-composed with 24.

During a press conference in Seoul Jennie said that “Solo” provides a chance for her to show the multi-faceted sides of herself. “Since I have given lots of strong and charismatic performances on the stage, many people think that I probably would be just like that in real life,” she said, according to Yonhap. “But many of those who have met me say that I have an aura of genuinely girlish charm,” she said when questioned about her personality.”

As a member of BLACKPINK, this is Jennie’s first solo track but she was previously featured as a singer on songs from Lee Hi, Seungri, and G-Dragon in 2013. She debuted “Solo” at BLACKPINK’s first solo concert in Seoul on Sunday (Nov. 11).
