Sam Cotton is a 19 year old rapper, singer, multi instrumentalist and producer hailing from South West London. Navigating his first year at university and unsure whether he should abandon his studies and pursue music full-time, his latest single, ‘Find My Way’ is a heartfelt composition that delves into the complexities of life’s choices and the apprehension that accompanies them – a sentiment shared not only by Sam but also resonating deeply with his circle of friends. “This song has my favourite chord progression I’ve ever written, which really allows the message to be emphasised.” says Sam.
Sam takes his musical influences from his mother, who fills their home with jazz, soul and hip-hop. These rhythms and rhymes have had a huge impact on his musical taste. In the midst of the global pandemic, when schools closed and social interactions were restricted, Sam found solace and inspiration in his lifelong love for music. Sam says “the extended hours of isolation gave me a unique opportunity to refine my production skills, resulting in the creation and production of my debut commercial song, utilising TikTok as a catalyst”.
Sam was soon getting offers to collaborate with a vocalist in Liverpool, a producer in Camden, and a photographer in Ealing, he saw the power of social media to create, share, and distribute music. The song collaboration ‘Rules’ currently has over 65,000 streams on Spotify, and they’ve never even met.
At eleven, he joined a local band called Groove Academy, where he spent five years experimenting with different instruments and learning to perform confidently in front of an audience. Every Wednesday, the local youth centre became his creative haven, a sanctuary where he unleashed his musical prowess. While the band dazzled audiences with their renditions of classics from luminaries like Stevie Wonder and Chic, it was their own composition, ‘Moonlight,’ that propelled them to the prestigious ‘Music for Youth Festival’ finals in 2019.
