About Pouya

An American rapper born Kevin Pouya on December 20, 1994, in Miami Florida; Pouya has a rich and somewhat unique cultural background. Growing up with an Iranian father and Cuban mother, Pouya’s diverse roots have been a major part of why he has formed his artistic identity into what it is, and the path he has taken for his musical journey.

Highschool dropout

Pouya grew up in Miami, and his rise to musical success is anything but traditional. When he was in high school, he made the brave decision to drop out as a sophomore which apparently would change his life. Working a grueling job as a toilet cleaner in a restaurant initially, Pouya built up the grit and determination that would go on to spur his musical career.

Before becoming a household name, Pouya was very much a part of the SoundCloud underground rap wave that began to take shape in 2012. He and his childhood friend Nicholas Voutsinas (Fat Nick) initially gained attention through their YouTube comedy channel, NICK AND POUYA SHOW, which featured comedy sketches and vlogs that sometimes included other emerging rappers like Denzel Curry and members of the Raider Klan.

Rap career

Around 2011, Pouya’s musical journey got underway. He released his first freestyle, “Shotz From The Double Glock,” with local Florida rapper Nell, marking the beginning of his serious rap career. A significant breakthrough came in 2013 with the release of “Get Buck,” a track that has since accumulated over 14 million video views and helped establish his presence in the rap scene.

Collaborating with Sir Michael Rocks of The Cool Kids on the EP Gookin’ further expanded his popularity. His fifth solo mixtape, Underground Underdog, demonstrated his growing impact, peaking at #156 on the Billboard 200 chart. Pouya is also responsible for discovering and early on helping draw attention to the now-famous hip-hop duo $uicideboy$.

Buffet boys

As an independent artist, Pouya co-founded the record label Buffet Boys with Fat Nick, releasing several solo albums including Underground Underdog, Baby Bone, and Five Five. His recent musical trajectory continues to impress, with his fourth studio album Blood Was Never Thick As Water released in 2021, followed by his sixth studio album They Could Never Make Me Hate You in 2024.

What’s next

The release of his latest album has led to the announcement of his highly anticipated 2025 tour, They Could Never Make Me Tour. While this tour represents the end of the road for Pouya’s ascent from an anonymous underground rapper with a day job to a respected artist with a small but loyal fan base occupying a niche segment of the hip-hop scene, it also signifies a huge achievement.

Pouya in San Diego

Pouya will hit up SOMA on March 11, 2025, this time for fans in San Diego. Pouya’s show will be a great venue at SOMA, known for hosting underground and alternative music acts.

He previously performed in San Diego during a show at Pechanga Arena on August 30, 2021, as part of the $uicideboy$’ Grey Day Tour, which you might have caught.

Pouya on Rolling Loud Festival

Pouya will once again perform at the annual Rolling Loud music festival at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California on March 17.

Rolling Loud’s founders, Tariq Cherif and Matt Zingler, recognized Pouya as part of the emerging SoundCloud rap scene that helped shape the festival’s identity. They noted that Pouya’s shows, along with those of artists like Denzel Curry and XXXTentacion, attracted a distinct fanbase that contributed to the festival’s growth.
