Emerging Shanghai-based hip hop artist GALI has finally released a new single, which comes a year after his last single with popular Chinese artist Yihuik苡慧 in 2022 called “因你而在 (Stay With Me).” Labeled “21,” this beautifully crafted track is issued out as part of Lay Zhang’s (LAY) D.N.A., a curated music collective that aspires to uplift emerging Chinese artists to a global level.
“21” is all about a girl named Ashley, a moniker for someone you might have been in love with. The artist makes it clear in this single that “This is not a love song,” and instead is a simple testament to the relationship he’s had. It’s not a love letter, but rather a poignant memoir that highlights the good times that had to come to an end. It’s ultimately a goodbye to Ashley, meaning a goodbye to anyone you’ve been in a relationship with.
Utilizing a mellow, laid-back beat in the backtrack and intimate lyrics about a relationship with Ashley, GALI brings his listeners into his world, exposing the emotional capabilities that he is capable of sharing. Writing about break-ups and exes isn’t always easy, but “21” makes it seem completely bearable. The rapper isn’t afraid to hold back, giving him the potential to be one of the next best lyricists in the newest generation of global rappers.
