Q: What’s your artist name and where are you from?
A: My name is Dee Dray, and I’m originally from Buffalo, New York, although I’ve been living in Charlotte since I attended The Johnson C. Smith University. Buffalo will always be my home, but now Charlotte has become my second. For almost half of my life, I’ve lived in both places. In addition to that, there are family, friends, and a business in both locations.
Q: Why do you love music?
A: I grew up around music. with my dad being a pastor I always was around it. Starting playing drums at 3 and going to Buffalo Academy for Visual and Performing Arts (BAVPA) for both middle and high school. There I began to be exposed to new genres of music such as classical, opera, etc. performed by the legend Kenny Rogers and the Jazz great David Brubeck.
Q: What makes you different as a music artist?
A: Simply put, I’m different. Therefore, even if the stories are relatable the delivery and stories will be different. My ability to create various styles of music comes from my love of different genres. So everyone can appreciate at the very least, a few songs within my catalog lol.
Q: Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
A: In five years, I see myself writing music for some of the most popular artists out there, as well as getting requests from other performers. Music has always been one aspect of my love for the arts. I went to a performing arts school and was in several stage plays and other performances while I was enrolled. Even after graduation, I’ve stayed involved by being in webisode series’ and more stage productions.
Q: What do you bring to the music world?
A: I bring a diverse style, creativity, and a mixing of genres. Creating a sea of good vibes and excitement. Especially while performing live with my band. It’s like a whole different level of detail, and the result is something unique and memorable that most unsigned artists won’t be able to achieve without major or real backing.
Q: What do you want to be remembered by?
A: I want to be remembered for contributing to and creating great music as well as the various philanthropy work in the community. That’s my true passion. Creating platforms and opportunities by educating the young with outlets and resources they typically wouldn’t have.
Q: Why do you create?
A: I create for many reasons, but the most notable reason would be because it’s how I provide value to others. Creating is enjoyable for me, and I get to make an impact on the lives of the people participating on my platform and the people watching and listening. I believe we shape the world with our creations.
Q: What do you want to accomplish in life?
A: I want to change lives including the people I love and family. It goes back to changing our communities and the youth in them.
Q: What is your most memorable accomplishment to date and why?
A: Opening for the various artists such as Nipsey Hussle, Special Ed, Yo-Yo, Future, 2 Chainz, and several others and having several dope conversations as a result. The relationships I’ve developed with various ppl like Leesha Baby and Drumma Sc and so many others. The opportunity to work with some of the most known producers to even the producers whose talent is out of this world but the world just doesn’t know them as that yet. Outside of music, my beautiful kids and my family.
