Exclusive Q&A

Germany Kent takes part in a new interview spotlight to discuss her exciting career and shares profound lessons on activism, perseverance, giving back, and staying true to oneself.

Q: What was one of your favorite books growing up?

Germany: “Oh, The Places You’ll Go!” So many days during my childhood, I would draw inspiration and motivation from reading this book by the late, great, brilliant cartoonist and renowned author Dr. Seuss. Unbeknownst to me, years ago, Dr. Seuss’s book would positively direct my career journey. I have always believed I would go to many different places and achieve greatness, even though my environment did not mirror a victorious life. I had to enlarge my vision and dream bigger. So, I decided to experiment and try new things.

Q: What was your favorite thing to do when you were younger?

Germany: As a youth, I loved to write poetry and composed notebooks of poems that, at this moment in time, have never been introduced to the world. My favorite thing to do was read books to my dolls. It’s so ironic, too, because though I have always loved to read and write, I never dreamt of becoming an author.

Q: What was it like growing up in Mississippi?

Germany: There were not a lot of opportunities to engage in the arts and entertainment. I became active in regional and state speaking activities to form connections with like-minded people. I started speaking competitively. I became heavily involved in pageants, eventually winning speaking competitions at state-level pageants and becoming the first Black teen to do so. I was often the underrepresented minority trying to promote an inclusive culture, which led to multiple Miss Congeniality awards. I kept myself busy with volunteering, traveling, and dreaming – I dreamed up a lot of stuff.

Q: Did you ever go against what was the norm, and how did that change you?

Germany: Breaking with tradition, I became the first person in my family not to attend an HBCU, dating back to my late grandfather. Not only did everyone attend an HBCU, but everybody attended the same HBCU. That was a significant shift, as I had always gone to the SWAC games and was very accustomed to that culture. But I was presented with an opportunity that I could not pass up. It ended up being historic because at my college, I was elected the first African-American woman to the student association cabinet out of a 9% minority population. Growing through that experience changed the way I felt about diversity and inclusion, and my desire to change the status quo.

Q: Where do you get your sense of values and desire to have such an imprint on the world?

Germany: My grandparents and parents instilled a sense of pride and confidence in me. One of the hallmarks of my grandparents and parents was enforcing the importance of giving back and making a difference in society. My grandmother always said charity begins at home. I remember when I went to intern at Walt Disney World during my last year as an undergraduate; at that time, nobody in my family had ever been to Disney World (or Florida), so working there offered an opportunity for my entire family to go at the end of the internship. My supervisor told me that if I could get my family to Orlando, he would get them all into the park, and he made good on his promise. During that time, I realized I was a changemaker for my family, and the opportunities I was afforded would help them become exposed to new things.

Q: Was is something that people may not know about you?

Germany: Growing up, I traveled frequently with my grandmother to visit with her two sisters who lived in Chicago. Interestingly, my great-uncle was best friends with John Vanoy, the father of Juanita Vanoy Jordan, who was married to NBA great Michael Jordan at the time. Because of that friendship, we were privy to attending many high-profile events hosted by the Bulls great during his prime. Those experiences were instrumental in laying the groundwork for my career and would later play a vital role in how I was able to interact with high-profile individuals as a tour guide at Walt Disney World. Over and above, the experiences would later pave the way for a broader scope and impact on how I have been able to interact with other pro athletes, business tycoons, prominent political figures, and a roster of household names successfully.

Q: How have your life experiences informed who you are today?

Germany: Looking back over my life, a central role was my fantasizing about the places I would go to, including a red carpet in Hollywood. I am a proponent of literacy because if we can teach kids to read, write, speak, imagine, create, dream, and achieve. My childhood experiences, family, and societal interactions have all informed who I am today. I’ve held executive roles at Fortune 500 companies, authored 10 books, interviewed more than 300 celebrities, and written over 2,000 quotes that have been published in more than 1,500 articles around the world. I enjoy leveraging my expertise in writing and media to create platforms to bring attention to causes and assist the underserved because I understand that I am standing on the shoulders of many people.

Q: Anything else that you would like to share with our readers?

Germany: I’m so grateful to have the opportunity to reach back and help others by empowering change through my work, guiding the new generations through self-confidence, and building inclusion and partnerships. My mission is to expand mentoring access for youth and promote volunteerism and community service across the globe. If you have a platform, you should use it to reach back and help others. To whom much is given, much is required, and it is up to all of us to represent a strong call to accountability and stewardship.
