Exclusive Interview with poet Kewayne Wadley

Kewayne Wadley

Q: Can you tell us about yourself?

Sure, of course! My name is Kewayne Wadley, I am 34 years old and currently reside in Memphis Tennessee.

Growing up I spent a lot of time down south. I grew up in Birmingham, Alabama as well as Soperton, Georgia.

While my dad was still in the navy I also lived in Central America (The Panama Canal) for four years. It was a pleasant experience!!

A lot of fun memories!! I am a huge music lover & love anything music hahaha. Outside of writing I am also an artist and have

Been drawing and painting for a long time now, I have been on my current job for fifteen years now & a plant dad to over 11 plants.

Q: How did you get started as a poet?

I have always been captivated by the essence of poetry. Amongst some of my favorite writers are Langston Hughes, Claude McKay,

Edgar Allen Poe, Nikki Giovanni, Federico Garcia Lorca, & Gil Scott-Heron. I remember talking to two of my good friends Jamaal Etheridge and Derek Perry

Whom are also writers and their advice to me were “Man, what are you afraid of?? just pick up the pen & go for it!! Long as you write what you feel what could possibly go wrong!” Those words ring true till this day as well as our friendship! I admit I was nervous hahaha but really, I never just looked at it with the end goal being a poet. It was something that I wanted to do and fell deeper in love with it the more that I wrote.

Q: What is the imagery in the poem?

Hmmm, as far as imagery I’d say it lives between free verse and extended metaphor

Q: Does writing energize or exhaust you?

To be honest, I am totally energized hahaha when I write I am at peace, and I feel free. It doesn’t matter what’s going on around me or what is initially

On my mind, I feel that I am in another world. It’s truly liberating

Q: Who is your hero?

As far as comics, Batman! But my real-life heroes would have to be my mom, my dad, my friends and my grandmother. Till this day I still look up to them and they encourage and instill that there is nothing that I cannot do. It’s truly a blessing to have a support system like that.

Q: What would you change about yourself if you could?

Very good question, and I am not going to short sell it. If I could change any one thing about myself, I would change the fact that I am not vocal

About a lot of the things that I say or feel, ironically. When I am writing I have the courage to say anything but in person sometimes things

Can come off wrong and you don’t want to take someone’s spirit or hope or joy or anything like that. I

can be dead tired and literally heading to bed,

Soon as my phone rings I’ll say that I am not doing anything and bounce right back up hahaha.

Q: What book are you reading right now?

Right now, I am currently re-reading Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk. It’s one of my favorite books

Q: Can you give any advice to someone wanting to write and publish poetry?

If I could give anyone wanting to start writing and publish poetry any type of advice at all, it would be to not be afraid, and patience is a virtue!

Don’t put yourself down and the main thing is to start and don’t stop! To not be discouraged
