“Exclusive Interview with JJ Tha Wikid”

JJ Tha Wikid

J.J. Tha Wikid 1 started writing rhymes as a teen in 1995 and started producing beats in 1998. He was the producer and a member of the hip-hop group WSM (Wikid Style Music) for several years. Afterwards he was the producer and member of the hip-hop duo J.J. & Whydhe Write.

He is 100% independent and makes his own beats, writes, raps, records, and mixes. His biggest producer influence is Dr. Dre. Along with Timbaland, Pharrell, Lil Jon, Scott Storch, and Kanye.

While he has several influences as a rapper, some of the top favorites are 2Pac, Eminem, NWA, Outkast, Bone Thugs n Harmony, Do or Die, Twista, Tech Nine, 8ball & MJG, UGK, Lords of the Underground, Beastie Boys, Sir-mix-a lot and many more.

As a producer and skilled writer/rapper, he has now created his own lane. Enjoy the ride because there are great things on the horizon!

Today we had an exclusive chance to interview the artist:

What is your legal name and age?

Jason Johnson, 43.

What is your stage name and how did you come up with it?
Ever since elementary school, people started calling me J.J. and over time more and more people continued to call me that. For the longest time I just went with J.J. as my rap name, but once I decided to start doing solo material, I knew I had to differentiate myself from a bunch of people that also go by J.J. My group member Indy Evans once called me J.J. Tha Wikid 1, and it just kinda stuck with me. Especially because our group was Wikid Style Music and our independent label was called Wikid Style Records, it just made sense.

Where are you from?
I was born in Minnesota and lived up there until I was about 5. My mother met my step father who was originally from Indiana and we ended up moving to Evansville.

Where are you now?
Evansville, Indiana.

Why did you first start making music?
It started with having an attraction to playing guitar and then once I started listening to rap I had a curiosity and desire to start writing and rapping myself. Over time it intensified and I wanted to see what people thought about my songs. When I received positive feedback it just fueled the passion even more.

Talk me through your creative process.

Most of the time it starts with me producing a beat and then letting the vibe talk to me and then the writing begins. But sometimes I have something in my head either a specific message idea or lyric and then I make a beat that fits that vision.

Do you remember the first rhyme you wrote?
Yes, probably not every single lyric, but I wrote my 1st couple verses to Dr. Dre’s ‘Keep Their Heads Ringin’ 1995.

What’s your latest release?
My song ‘Get Up’ it dropped August 19th. I made 2 versions, one explicit and one that’s a radio edit. At some point I plan to release a music video for it as well.

What are you focusing your time on now?
I will be releasing another single in September and then plan to drop my 1st official E.P. in November. I’m pretty excited about it!

What is your favorite song to perform?
Right now, I would say ‘Wikid Flow’ but my next single that drops in September, might be equal to it or possibly overtake that spot.
