Exclusive Interview with Fast Rising Ohio artist Micky Perry

Micky Perry is an independent artist out of Zanesville, Ohio. His lyrical acrobatics combined with story telling & vulnerability gives the listener an intimate look inside of his thoughts and perspective.

He has a catalog that includes songs with incredibly talented artists such as Sheven out of Kansas City, Missouri (BPD) & Nova out of Columbus, Ohio (Better Person).

What is your name and what city do you rep?

My name is Micky Perry. I’m from Ohio. Zanesville to be exact. It’s about 40 minutes outside of Columbus.

Tell us about your latest releases, what inspired you to create them?

My latest release is a track called “Business”, It’s about making sure you are in the best position to handle whatever business it is you have to handle. I was inspired to write it after a bad business dealing over a beat. Another release of mine is called BPD. It features Sheven from out of Kansas City, Missouri.

The song is inspired by the actual personality disorder I live with. I wanted to make a track that could explain what it’s like and to help people understand the struggle that comes with living with BPD.  The last release I’ll discuss is called Better Person, official video on YouTube now!!

It is a song inspired by a situation I was in in a relationship. It discusses what one must do to be a better person. Admit that they’re wrong and try to grow from it.

What is unique about you and your music?

I would say the unique thing about myself and my music is my vulnerability.
I’m willing to let people know I’m human and on this planet with you/them and that I struggle daily.

I let people in to hopefully gain some kind of relief knowing they aren’t alone and there’s another side on the dark feelings you/they may have. You just gotta keep pushing.

What shaped your music?

I believe the fact my Dad is a singer , he grew up signing with the O’Jays in Canton, Ohio, and my mom played the organ and sang in the church choir. We also used to have performance parties when I was young. The family would get together and preform our favorite songs.

I also believe keeping a journal ,because I felt I couldn’t express myself in my home, shaped the style of my music. It’s really personal and conversational in my opinion.

When did you realize you were going to make music professionally?

When I was maybe 15. I did a freestyle at the park and the next few days people wanted me to keep preforming the freestyle as well as whatever else I was willing to let them hear. It gave me a sense of belonging that is hard to explain.

What type of music do you listen to?

I listen to a little bit of all genres. R&B, folk, pop, rock, dub step even country & classical. I’m willing to listen to everything. I try to keep an eclectic palette of music. Keeps the brain sharp.

What inspires you to write music?

Life. it’s pressures, it’s good times and it’s bad. Music for me is very cathartic & I feel that goes for the listener as well.

What do you do when you don’t do music (creative or otherwise) and that you are passionate about?

I like to read and have talks with my child. I also like to play and watch basketball.
My favorite teams are Boston Celtics, The LA Lakers and The Chicago Bulls. I’m also really passionate about the state of the world and what we can do to make things better for the people that need it.

What do you wish you were told when you first started making music that you think would help artists just starting out?

It takes a team. Do your best to have a solid group of people on your side that all see your vision and want to help you succeed.

Tell us about your upcoming projects…

I have a video and song coming out in November with an artist named Eisman from out of Germany. Its called “Concrete on the Tongue.” It’ll be on his album Frost. I will also be dropping videos until the end of this year. I’ll also be touring so keep an eye out for me in your city!
