Exclusive Interview: Rising Australian Artist Senior.

What is your name and what city do you rep?

My name is Jarryd Senior my artist name is Senior. and I rep the whole country of Australia

Tell us about your latest releases, what inspired you to create them?

My latest release is called weekday. The song came about when going back to my home city of Melbourne for my mother’s funeral and I met up with my long time friend and artist Pasika who you hear on the song after Fat Joe. We linked up and I knew I had to take my life to the next level for my mother and we got to work. As soon as Pasika Layed down his hook. I knew we had a hit. The song is about the characteristics of what a guy looks for in a woman when wanting a relationship.

What is unique about you and your music?

I’m Australian, I am myself, I have my own sound and swagger, I know who I am and I don’t try and be something I am not.

What shaped your music?

My crazy life, My experiences, growing up being bullied and insecure and wanting to become the opposite of that. I wanted to be confident and powerful. I got hooked on hip hop at a very young age because it gave me that energy and all of the artists had that swagger. I started out being a drummer and from there I learned how to make beats… for Pasika funny enough and then he wouldn’t show up to sessions so I started rapping over the beats. I have always loved boss artists as well as melodic artists so I have taken parts of both and blended the two in my own unique way.

When did you realize you were going to make music professionally?

from a very young age I was playing music on stage in bands with adults since I was like 7 or 8.

What type of music do you listen to?

Mainly Hip Hop and R&B however I am also a DJ and love house and electro music. I also love acoustic music.

What inspires you to write music?

Life, becoming the person I wanted to be when I was younger and the want to inspire others that they can come from the mud and become successful and believe in themselves regardless of their situation, especially for the youth in my country. I try to put a positive message in my music. I will drop personal development books or quotes or people that I look up to or do their courses hoping that some people will catch on and check it out, like in Weekday I reference the book Rich Dad Poor Dad which is about financial education and becoming a boss and investor.

What do you do when you don’t do music (creative or otherwise) and that you are passionate about?

I run multiple companies. I own a couple of boxing gyms, an Investment company, Real Estate Business, Clothing brand as well a record label and entertainment company and a few other little things. I really fell in love with business when I was sleeping on the streets of Melbourne 10 years ago just like when I was bullied at a younger age and wanted to become a rapper and have the confidence and swagger they had. When I ended up homeless for the second time literally sleeping on a park bench in the winter of Melbourne I swore I was going to become rich so I went to a book shop every day and started reading every book I could find on business which lead me to get into personal development as well which helped me turn my life around. So when I’m not making music or running my companies I am usually doing some other course or working out which is a lot easier when you own your own gyms! I am lucky I get to wake up do what I love every day… but don’t get it twisted it’s hard AF!

Happiness to you is…

a decision.

What do you wish you were told when you first started making music that you think would help artists just starting out?

Do you. Don’t try and copy what’s hot at the moment. Jay Z speaks on this very well about his career and longevity. For me that was the hardest part. I would make music to try and fit in but if you do that you aren’t being you and I could feel that. You have to work on yourself to know who you are and be authentic and that takes guts and time. But in the words of one of my biggest influences the late Nipsey Hussle this shit is a marathon. I would also stress the importance of marketing, in my country anyway a lot of artists don’t understand that if you want to be an artist you have to know how to market your music it is a business and if you don’t market your business you won’t have one. There is all of this hype by people at the moment that have never actually been a successful artist telling you to make 100 songs and release a song a day for a year. if you can’t market one song then what makes you think putting out a hundred more the same way will fix that? you will get the same results. Build a great product, test the market, get feedback and then market the shit out of it.

Tell us about your upcoming projects…

I have a global remix of weekday coming out with artists from Australia, the U.S, Canada, and the UK.
I also have multiple new projects coming out this year but you will have to wait for them!
