Dre the General is the professional name of Hip-hop recording artist, Andre Clark. A New York City native, the rapper grew up in Brooklyn. Living with his mother and four cousins, music was a constant presence in the home. At a very young age he started writing his own songs, inspired by his heroes; Michael Jackson, Jay-Z and Lil Wayne.
In 2014 Dre the General released his debut album “Almost There.” With that record he introduced a unique sound that includes creative production and a writing style that veers away from most of the common Hip-hop tropes. Since then the prolific rapper has delivered another full length album and over a dozen singles, including six in 2020. Now Dre is back with a brand new EP.
“Pressure” is the new EP from Dre the General, released worldwide to all major streaming services on July 16, 2021. The five song collection is an excellent introduction to the rapper’s distinctive style. From the opening track “Big Dog” to the closer “Talk to Them,” Dre rhymes about everything from being vegan to not doing drugs. However, although he steers clear of the typical Drill Rap fodder, he goes hard with expert technique and an endless flow of really clever rhymes.
Musically the record combines some old and new-school grooves with trippy instrumentation. Songs like “Big Dog” and “We Outside” ride on Boom Bap beats paired with Trap hi-hats, while “Dream Team” goes full Trap. “Church” introduces a soulful R&B/Gospel vibe to match the song’s title, although the lyrics take a few funny turns away from the pulpit. Guest rapper Hazeratii lends an impressive chopping verse. The record ends on the Jazz guitar fueled “Talk to Them” with excellent laid-back performances from Dre and special guest Beauty Bellaa.
