Vonkapri, an up-and-coming artist from Chicago, has always been deeply connected to music. Growing up, she was heavily influenced by her uncles, who were huge fans of legendary hip-hop artists like Tupac, Biggie, and Wu-Tang Clan. Their passion for music and the powerful messages within these icons’ lyrics sparked something inside Vonkapri, and from that moment, she was determined to pursue her own musical career. “I grew up heavily influenced by seeing my uncles be big fans of Tupac, Biggie, and Wu-Tang,” Vonkapri reflects. “Their music shaped my perspective and inspired me to pick up a mic and share my own story.”
Now, Vonkapri is carving out her own unique space in the music industry. Her sound is as original as it is authentic, blending real-life experiences with a raw, unfiltered energy. Whether she’s rapping about life’s hardships, overcoming struggles, or navigating personal challenges, Vonkapri’s music is a reflection of her own journey—and it’s something her audience can connect with deeply. “I talk about real-life hardships and struggles,” she says. “Unless you’re born with a silver spoon, you can relate. Even then, though, you can still relate.”
One of the most exciting milestones in Vonkapri’s career has been the success of her music video for her track “One Too.” The video has been gaining momentum and resonating with viewers, showing just how much Vonkapri is starting to connect with her audience. “The video for ‘One Too’ is really getting around,” she shares, proud of the recognition it’s receiving. But Vonkapri’s journey has not come without its challenges. As an independent artist, she often faces the reality of budget restrictions, but she thrives in these circumstances, drawing on her resourcefulness and creativity. “There’s usually a budget restriction with most independent artists,” she explains, “but I thrive in having to be creative in that space. I grew up learning how to make something out of nothing, and that’s how I approach my music.”
Despite the struggles, Vonkapri is driven by the feedback she receives from her fans. It’s these heartfelt messages that fuel her desire to keep going. “It’s the feedback I sometimes get,” she says. “People have told me they cried over listening to a track or they got chills from listening. Just knowing someone else knows the ‘feeling’ is usually enough.”
Vonkapri has also had the opportunity to collaborate with some of her musical idols, including BSF artist Fuego Base. “I recently got a chance to collaborate with one of my fav BSF artists, Fuego Base,” she says, visibly excited. “I’m really proud of that track and can’t wait for everyone to hear it.” These collaborations represent a significant step forward for Vonkapri, and she looks forward to more opportunities to work with artists who inspire her.
As she continues to evolve in her career, Vonkapri is becoming more engaged with her fans through social media. “This is something I’m starting to do more of lately,” she explains. “I’ll make a post or reel asking an engaging question, or I’ll have an ‘ask me anything’ survey so my fans can get personal with me. I’ve even been known to drop an impromptu freestyle, which helps with my reels and DM engagements.” This direct connection with her audience is helping her build a loyal community of supporters who appreciate her authenticity.
Looking ahead, Vonkapri is especially excited for her next release, “Retrograde.” “I REALLY like that one and can’t wait to see how it performs and how fans respond to it,” she shares, her excitement palpable. With her unique sound, undeniable talent, and strong connection to her audience, Vonkapri is primed for even greater success.
Although she’s been navigating her career independently, Vonkapri is open to exploring opportunities with a label, including distribution deals. “I wasn’t aware that was a service you offered, but I am interested in what that would entail,” she says, eager to learn about potential avenues for growth and collaboration.
Every track Vonkapri creates is a testament to her resilience and passion. Her music reflects her life’s challenges, triumphs, and the universal experiences that connect us all. As she continues to build her career, there’s no telling how far Vonkapri will go—but one thing is certain: she’s just getting started.
