Indie pop Aussie band My Elephant Ride release their new anthem “Without You”; a beautiful, poetic fusion of pop sensibilities with a hip hop twist. The song came to life in a tiny Melbourne CBD AirBnB, where the band spent a week surrounded by cables, instruments, and ideas that spilled from morning to night. The song grew out of reflections on adolescence—seeing a nephew grapple with first love, scraped knees, and late-night mischief—and imagining how it feels from his perspective. Blending live instruments, samples, and playful vocal tweaks, My Elephant Ride shaped a heartfelt, coming-of-age hip-hop track with a hook that captures that awkward, beautiful edge of growing up.
My Elephant Ride craft a deeply affecting listening experience with “Without You,” a release that glides between dreamy indie pop tones and understated hip hop rhythms with remarkable finesse. The arrangement feels fluid and unrestrained, allowing each sound to breathe while still forming a cohesive and immersive atmosphere. Vocally, there’s a delicate balance of vulnerability and character, drawing listeners into a world that feels both personal and universally relatable. Rather than leaning on familiar tropes, the band leans into nuance, creating a piece that resonates through mood, texture, and emotional honesty. It’s a compelling showcase of artistic maturity, positioning the group as innovators capable of shaping a sound that feels fresh, expressive, and quietly unforgettable.
My Elephant Ride has been writing and playing music together since childhood, long before they knew what a “music career” looked like. After studying music at university, they formed a band fueled by a love for expansive sound, big ideas, and, yes, elephants. The majestic creatures’ instinct, memory, and unwavering herd loyalty became an inspiration for the group of uni graduates. Over the past decade, they’ve independently released more than 30 songs across multiple EPs and three full-length albums. Along the way, they’ve shared stages with artists like Dope Lemon and collaborated with Stu Mackenzie, who produced one of their previous albums.
Their 2026 single, “Without You,” kicks off a new chapter, the first of several singles leading up to their next album; a record they describe as their most honest and fully realized work to date. For My Elephant Ride, the creative process is everything and they often take instruments and recording gear to unconventional places, from deserts to empty houses. A particularly memorable session took place in the desert home of a band member’s late grandparents, where they felt it was their duty to write and record in the space that once held so much life. With the anticipation for their next album building up ferociously, My Elephant Ride are certain to be at the forefront of the indie scene.
