An Interview With Atlanta Artist RaQuel

What inspired your project “555.”

When making 555, I just wanted to have fun. It allowed me to experiment with some different r&b sounds, and create something for people to dance and vibe to.

What inspires your music and what is your creative process like?

I’ve been inspired by music my whole life. So when I create, I’m just showing the the world the best part of me. I don’t have a specific reason for creating, I guess it makes me feel free..or it makes me feel like the real me. I can be sitting at home and all of a sudden start humming a melody or start singing lyrics. My process is completely random lol.

Songwriting, singing, recording, and more go into getting a song done. Do you have a favorite or a least favorite part from start to finish?

I love writing lyrics, I love listening to beats. I don’t favor recording so much because you never know how something will come out. I may have an idea of how a song will sound, and leave the studio with a whole different product.

As an artist in the Atlanta area, what separates your sound from others?

I’m not trap, I’m not rap, and I don’t think I’m r&b fully either..my sound may separate me from others since I don’t necessarily fit into those genres completely.

If you could open for one artist, who would it be and why?

Probably Drake because he has all the fans lol.

What is your favorite music release of 2022?

I loved Beyonce’s Renaissance album. It is such a breath of fresh air to listen to, and it makes me want to dance or get drunk.
